From the moment I opened the box, it was in love with these bags. My first reaction was ‘WOW’. Picking up the bags, they felt different than any laptop case I ever owned, and I’ve owned many. Lovely to the touch, and they even smelled good. Felt great in the hand, the handle fitting comfortably and beautiful to look at and the touch of the material was delightful. History of the Work Bag

Beginning the end of September you can celebrate the fall colors at Mount Tremblant’s Symphony of Color.

Bed and Breakfasts, also known as B&B’s have been around since the dawn of man. In earlier days homeowners would open their dwelling to weary travelers, and generously include breakfast in the price of a night’s stay. A demonstration of goodwill was one reason to bestow hospitality upon a stranger, but also the incentive of a supplemental income was an added bonus. The welcoming and loving nature of the residents made them a perfect spot for a traveler to rest his head and fill his belly.

Bed and Breakfasts: From Monastery to Luxury Destination

Throughout Europe, the traditional B&B grew in popularity, and thanks to the British Isles, the term formally stuck. The grateful traveler was offered a room among the family along with possibly three or four other guests, with perhaps one bathroom for all. Not surprising, one of the earliest forms of a bed and breakfast was the monastery.  Although Europeans had been taking advantage of the Bed and Breakfast experience for decades, the idea finally crossed the ocean around 1960 and landed in the US. Although B&B’s were often used to supplement a homeowner’s income, today they are no longer viewed as low cost lodging facilities.

Today, B&B’s are seen as an attractive alternative to the typical standard chain hotel or motel room, and they can be found all around the world. Having personalized service that is quaint, homey and welcoming attracts the most seasoned traveler to experience the extraordinary, with amenities that can be just as luxurious as a five star hotel. Typical Bed and Breakfast guests share a bathroom however many will provide you with your own bathroom, along with toiletries and in some, a full service spa!

Bed and Breakfasts: A Combination of Privacy and Sociality

Breakfast is most definitely included, sometimes along with lunch and dinner. Homeowners may still live in the house, but occasionally they are in a secondary residence near by. “A dry martini. Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel.” Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond, also invented The Vesper — the martini Bond ordered “shaken, not stirred”. While Gordon’s Gin and vodka are familiar liquors, Kina Lillet may be more mysterious.

What is Lillet?

Lillet (pronounced lee-lay) is a delightful wine aperitif from France. Aperitifs were introduced in 1846 by French chemist Joseph Dubonnet as a tonic wine and contained the healing properties of quinine. To mask the bitter taste, Dubonnet added herbs and spices. Around the same time the Lillet brothers, Paul and Raymond, created Kina Lillet, which also contained quinine but instead of the Dubonnet blend they added wines and fruit liqueurs from the Bordeaux region of France. Served before a meal for the most health benefit, aperitifs soon became synonymous with a feeling of celebration, relaxation and comfort, while “waking up” the palate, and stimulating the appetite.

About Lillet

Maison du Lillet is situated in Podensac, a village in the Aquitaine region of Bordeaux, in southwestern France. Production is constant year round and consists of a blend of vintages to ensure a consistent taste from year to year. And it’s this taste that the famous and infamous adore. The Duchess of Windsor introduced Lillet to Paris in the 50s and traveled with a bottle in her luggage.

Enjoying Lillet: Red and White

Lillet, available in Rouge and Blanc, is similar to vermouth, but has the wonderfully distinct flavors of honey, orange, lime, and mint. It is best served chilled (as you would a white wine) and can be enjoyed on its own over ice with optional orange slice, or in a cocktail. Postcards have a rich history spanning all four corners of the globe. Dating back to 1840, the postcard’s use and appeal have been as varied as the styles themselves. Hand delivered lithograph prints, woodcuts and small cards were the originals predating the “mailed” postcard by two decades. The first copyrighted postcards appearing in 1861 were dedicated mainly to advertising until government issued cards began appearing as early as 1870 in Hungary.

It wasn’t until 1889 that pictorial postcards became popular. Since then, whimsical art and the introduction of photographs have evolved through seven distinct eras of postcard production. Among them, the Pioneer era, the Linen Card and Photochrome eras and the introduction of Real Photo postcards that we are more familiar with today, have each provided a rich tapestry of historical reference, and a creative and delightful way of communicating through the written word.

Enjoying A Vintage or Antique Postcard Collection

Dedicated deltiologists can determine era, publisher and country of origin just by studying the embossing, thickness or postmark on a card. For those less studied, it is often a particular picture or style that delights the eye and encourages a purchase. Images have ranged over the years from hand painted landscapes to historical moments to drawings and photos of exotic locations like Paris’ Eiffel Tower or The Empire State Building in New York City.

Devoted collectors organize their anthologies in albums and protective coverings that preserve the images and delicate postcards. Beautiful collectibles can be found at many antique stores or markets with some fetching upwards of $20 or even $200 depending on the era and condition of an authentic card.

Display Your Vintage Postcards

But rather than hide them away, for those less expensive collectibles, why not display them to enjoy in your home or cottage. Framed and hanging in an entryway or bedroom, these classic reminders of the past can add instant charm to any décor and instantly transport you to a simpler place and time. Sneaking in a weekend getaway can be a perfect way to revitalize and refresh yourself. Just knowing that an adventure is around the corner can make the long week fly by. It’s important to put thought into the preparation of your weekend bag. You should pack only what is needed but with enough thought that nothing is left behind.

The Bag

Your first consideration should be the bag itself. Whether you are flying or driving, a suitcase is impractical. The size of a suitcase may not be a hindrance but you just don’t need that many articles of clothing for a short weekend away. Instead, opt for a stylish and functional soft sided weekend bag. Leather or canvas are your best options for durability and functionality. Both will offer your contents protection from the elements and are the least likely to become stained or soiled should you have an unexpected spill in the bag. Invest in something reliable and fabulous such as a Louis Vuitton Keepall and you will always have a weekend bag that is ready to go.

What’s Inside

Consider what your weekend will include. Be sure to include the essentials that are key to the theme of the weekend such as swimsuit and beach hat or hiking shoes and water bottle. Not only does this take up less room but these are essential if your bag is carry-on for a flight due to liquid restrictions on planes. Toss in an ipod if an early morning walk is an essential part of your routine and be sure to remember your camera to capture memories of your time away.

Once you have mastered the art of preparing a weekend bag you can let your mind relax and enjoy not only the trip itself but the anticipation of the trip in the days leading up to it.

Tell us about your Farm; what kind of farm it is and its history.

Dunmoylan has been in my husband’s family since the early 1800’s and it is still very much a family-run enterprise. We are located near the Shannon estuary in the Southwest part of Ireland. We are surrounded by acres of fertile green pastures as well as hilly rocky knolls dotted with castle and monastery ruins. Dunmoylan has very humble beginnings and is steeped in history.

Today, we have a herd of dairy cattle and raise free-range chickens. We also produce renewable energy in the form of biogas and wind power. Our hope is to one day very soon, be fully self-sustainable. The dairy cows are grass-fed and we partially use a Lely robotic milking system, which is very gentle on the cows. The girls come in when they feel ready, get milked and go back out to pasture to graze or have a rest.

Do you participate much in the day to day farming? If so what do you do?

I help out on the farm as needed, mainly paperwork in the office and running errands for supplies. We have a large kitchen garden which I tend to each day and provide vegetables for the farm dinners as well. My main role at the moment is Mommy and I am developing another farm-related business that I would manage as well.

What were some of the biggest growing pains transitioning from city to country?

The most challenging thing was leaving my career and my 27th floor office with a view! I loved my work as a producer and I still miss the buzz, accomplishment and inspiration that goes with shooting and editing a film/video/commercial for public consumption. I have had some freelance assignments here in Ireland, but it is tough because we live so far from Dublin and there is little production work available. I’ve basically had to change gears, re-calibrate and create a new opportunity for myself. I also struggled with the general lack of convenience you have living rurally. I underestimated how much I was used to having everything at my fingertips and found it very difficult to adjust initially. Things like not being able to go out and grab a bite to eat and a fabulous coffee at a lovely, healthy café or just popping into Target and getting everything you need in one stop. Now, I cook and bake almost everything from scratch using many ingredients from our farm and garden and I love it.

What brings you the most joy when it comes to country living?

Being outdoors. Fresh air. The enduring and sweet cycle of life on a farm. The sheer beauty and stillness of the Irish countryside. So green, lush and alive, but also peaceful and thought provoking. It can be a very spiritual place. Once I allowed myself to fully embrace this new life, I found it to be utterly enchanting. I am also in love with gardening and all things horticultural. Working in our garden gives me such a lift and is something I am very passionate about. I love sharing our harvest with friends and family, it brings a great sense of fulfillment.

Your blog provides a fun and fresh account of your life in Ireland, what are your plans for your blog?

I have begun to focus on traditional Irish dishes for my Blog, featuring traditional recipes with a bit of a fresh twist via photography or storytelling. There is a demand for it and I happen to have access to some of oldest recipes in the country! I plan on adding more posts on gardening/home/entertaining as well very soon. I really love the process of preparing a dish, photographing it and writing something special about it.

What do you wish people knew about living in Ireland?

It’s not the same as visiting. People have had a hard time understanding why it has been a challenge for me at times to acclimate to Irish living. Most people have a fantasy of what life is like here and I can see why. I did too when I had my initial visits, it is such an unbelievably magical place especially when you are on holiday. But, the weather can be extremely taxing as the sun rarely makes an appearance and it really does make an impact on everyday living.

What don’t you miss about city living?

Sitting in traffic. Sirens and horns all night. The rat race. All things I’ve happily left behind.

How has this relocation changed your perspective on home and life?

It has given me a greater sense of home than I’ve ever known. It has taken nearly six years, but I now feel more at home here than anywhere else.

Doing nothing is a very restorative and inspiring activity, that when carried out with intention, is calming, centers your focus and can even release the tightness of a stressed body and mind plus has the added bonus of stimulating the imagination. Would Newton have been inspired when made his discovery while busy doing something else other than daydreaming, lying under that apple tree? Probably not! Give yourself permission to engage in leisure time like they used to do it over the ages. This is type of activity is particularly great one to engage in the summer months when the heat makes moving about less appealing anyway! Begin by practicing the art of doing nothing, embracing the hazy summer days and enjoy them in an idyllic way.

The Simple Pleasures of Doing Nothing

Some ‘do nothings’ to let your mind wander, become present in the moment and take in the beauty around are glorious activities like: cloud watching, just lying in the grass and watching the sky looking at the clouds and the wonders that drift above or tree gazing, lying under a tree on a blanket or cool white sheet gives you a both shady rest spot, gazing through the leaves and watch the light dance in the moving branches.
