Meet A Farmer – Ulla Kjarval, Spring Lake Farms

Ulla Farmer

Spring Lake Farms, Meredith, New York

In this first of many interviews to come, you’ll meet a farmer. I love farmers, and I wanted to introduce you to some of the ones I know. I think they are vitally important as they are the hope for the future of our food. Getting to know your local farms and farmers is a great way to reconnect with good food. It is an opportunity to learn about and get more enjoyment from the food you eat.

Spring Lake FarmThrough the marvelous world of social networking, I met the lovely Ulla Kjarval the thirty-something daughter of a New York grass-fed farming family situated on a 100-acre farm in New York. In this piece, you’ll learn about the story of a modern farming family, what grass-fed meat is and the difference between mass produced meat, the future of farming from the perspective of a farmer, the story of a young second generation young woman who decided to join the family business and a recipe for cooking with grass-fed meats! Read the entire interview on the Blog and even see a video from the farm!

  1. Ulla’s paternal great grandfather was my maternal great grandfather’s brother. Johannes Kjarval & Gunnar S. Kjarval were brothers born in Iceland. I have researched my family tree most of my adult life, but  Ulla’s father was trying to find some paintings last I had heard and I tried to communicate with Ulla and I never heard from her again, so it is strange to me I came upon this article on Twitter. My family is no where near New York. We are from Portland, Oregon and my mother does run a little private urban style farm with chickens that lay eggs that we do eat everyday almost. She grows vegtables every year and you can see it clearly on Google Earth maps from above. I think someone should write an article about my mother and her skills sometime.

This is a nice article about Ulla Kjarval.
    Thanks- Michelle Norton.
